Spread out across its seven hills, the old city of Lisbon, or Lisboa, is a delight. Downtown Baixa – recently given UNESCO World Heritage status – sits at the heart of the city. On either side of it are the city’s two showcase squares, Praça do Comércio and Praça Dom Perdo IV.

Add to this the great shops of the Chiado district, to the west of the city, and the jumping nightlife of the Bairro Alto, and you can see why Lisbon’s creating such a buzz amongst backpackers and travelers.
